Highfield Level 2 Award for Upskilling a Door Supervisor (Refresher) – SIA Licence Renewal

Overview

This Door Supervisor (Refresher) qualification is required to renew an existing SIA Door Supervisor licence. The course reflects current SIA requirements and must be completed through physical attendance. Training is delivered over 2 days by an approved Highfield centre.

Course includes:

• 2 days in-person classroom training

Who Is This Course For?

You must take this qualification if:
• You currently hold an SIA Door Supervisor licence
• Your licence is due to expire, or has expired
• You completed your previous DS qualification before April 2021, when new SIA standards were introduced
• You need to refresh physical intervention training
• You are required to meet updated SIA counter-terror guidance

Unit 1 – Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in the Private Security Industry

(Required by the SIA from 2021 onwards)

You will learn:
• Understanding contemporary terror threats
• Identifying suspicious behaviour
• Incident response and evacuation
• Run, Hide, Tell guidance
• Venue vulnerability awareness
• Working with police & emergency services

This training ensures all door supervisors have strong knowledge of identifying and responding to potential terror risks.

Unit 2 – Principles of Using Equipment as a Door Supervisor

(Updated to reflect new SIA best practice)

This module includes:
• Using and maintaining PPE
• Defensive equipment awareness
• Use of radios and communication devices
• Searching individuals safely and lawfully
• Understanding new safety guidance
• Responsibilities when monitoring restricted items

Unit 3 – Application of Physical Intervention Skills

(Practical module — Highfield-approved techniques)
Delivered by qualified physical intervention instructors:
• Non-restrictive intervention skills
• Escorting and safe holding options (legally compliant)
• Protecting yourself and others
• Team-based interventions
• Risks of positional asphyxia
• Lawful use of force (UK legislation)
• Minimising risk and harm
• Realistic pressure drills
This is a practical, scenario-driven session that ensures you remain safe, compliant and
legally protected during physical incidents.

Mandatory First Aid Requirement

As per the SIA’s current regulations, all learners must hold a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate before attending.

Assessments

Learners must successfully complete:
• Multiple-choice exam for Terror Threat Awareness
• Multiple-choice exam for Use of Equipment
• Practical physical intervention demonstration (assessed)

Entry Requirements

To enrol you must:

• Be 18 years or older
• Hold a current or recently expired SIA Door Supervisor Licence
• Have a valid EFAW certificate
• Speak and understand English to the required standard
• Bring:
• Accepted photographic ID (passport/driving licence)
• 1–2 passport photos
• Proof of address (for ID checks)

Pre-Course Learning Requirements

• Completion of ACT (Action Counters Terrorism) Awareness and ACT Security e-learning modules prior to attendance.
• ACT e-learning must be completed via the official UK Government ProtectUK platform: https://www.protectuk.police.uk
• A valid Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or equivalent qualification.
• Learners must hold an existing SIA Door Supervisor licence (or be within the permitted renewal window).
• Physical attendance is mandatory; this qualification cannot be completed online.

English Language Requirements

• Learners must have a good command of spoken and written English.
• All learners complete an initial English language assessment at the start of the course to confirm they can fully participate in training and assessments. This is a requirement of SIA-linked training.
• Learners must be able to read and understand training materials and written assessments in English.
• Learners must communicate effectively in spoken English during classroom discussions and practical exercises.
• Where necessary, learners may be asked to complete an initial English language assessment or provide evidence of English language competence.
